RidgeForest I wish the 90s nu-metal was more often like this! There were a lot of worse bands stealing all the attention and making the concept of rap metal seem lame, while Manhole would have good stuff like this. Tairrie's vocals are awesome.

ladylily75 I am over the moon to have this album back after my kids destroyed my CD. I remember seeing them quite often on the Strip with Snot and Human Waste Project. The music and lyrics have always hit hard! Time to bust out my Manhole T-shirt and embrace my inner 90's chick :-)

Constantine Jones The first few seconds of Cycle of Violence say it all: "I will do everything in my power to speak out again racism, sexism, & violence against women motherfucker!" -- a promise Ms. B's been keeping with every new record/tour/interview etc. I came to My Ruin just before Throat Full of Heart, on the heels of Brutal Language. Revisiting this record (beyond the fact that it absolutely shreds) is a warm reassurance that one of my favorite artists has always remained true to herself w/ ferocious love. Favorite track: Down.

----------------------------------------

STEP FORWARD, if you dare, into a world of gang warfare, abuse and misogyny. If you're someone who chooses to believe that the above play no part in the real world, Manhole are here to ruin you life. Led by the fantastic Tairrie B, a veteran of the West Coast gangsta rap movement, Manhole are quite possibly the angriest band in history. This is shocking, brilliant, brutal hardcore rap from the sewers of LA. Tairrie is every bit as tough as she is sexy and leads this uncompromising outfit with a steely resolve and some of the most confrontational lyrics you're ever gonna hear. Imagine Downset rucking with Rage Against The Machine and Biohazard and you're halfway there. This is truly massive. Manhole are a band intent on dealing out hard truths."Hyprocrite" powers in on the back of a fat riff straight from the Pantera stable before Tairrie unleashes the first of her blood curdling social tirades, "Sickness", "Kiss or Kill" and "Break" maintain the heat, moving forward at breakneck pace. Driven by the rhythmic engine of bassist Rico Villasenor and drummer Marcelo Palomino, guitarist Scott Ueda piles on riff after riff, alternating the pace with frightening precision. The anti-rape message of "Victim" could not be any clearer if it leapt out of the speakers and kicked you in the teeth. The scything guitars and explosive vocals of "Clean" are so dense and direct they leave your room with jagged shards where there had once been windows. "Roughness" buzzes with latent energy. It's aggression restrained on the most flimsy of leashes before the final brain-crushing pairing of "Cycle Of Violence" and "Down" literally ram themselves home. This is a rage too f**king hostile to be faked. For a debut alum "All Is Not Well" is a rousing statement of intent. It literally blazes past in three minute bursts, frazzling your nerves and pummeling your brain. Lightweight Manhole most certainly are not. The resolute young band will shortly be opening for Fear Factory and should be worth turning up early for. Question is can you handle it?

4/5 ★ Steve Beebee | Kerrang! 1996
---------------------------------------
Heavy shit happening here. The debut album by Los Angeles rap/metal/hardcore quartet Manhole, "All Is Not Well", is a bludgeoning assault of socially conscious lyrics and anger. The album's songs deal with topics ranging from rape to racism to sexism, and when singer/screamer Tairrie B. sings them, they seem so real and so "in-yer-face." From the opening chords of "Hypocrite", the albums kicks into some serious grooves and rhythms that do some serious work on your cranium. Get kicked hard and violently by such lash-outs as "Empty", "Victim", and "Cycle of Violence". Producer Ross Robinson (Korn/Deftones/Sepultura) has done a remarkable job capturing the intensity and live feel of the band on CD and the band play off that work by delivering overbearing doses of adrenaline numerous times throughout the debut. Raw and downright ruthless at times, Manhole's debut will no doubt catch the ears of fans of such diverse bands as Korn, Rage Against the Machine and Life of Agony.

8/10 ★ Adrian Bromley | Chronicles Of Chaos 1996
---------------------------------------
"Rapping is not just about stringing together a few lines, it's about attitude, self-confidence and skill. Manhole's feisty Tairrie B possesses all three. She dominates the stage like a prowling Bengal tiger and is arguably the most compelling frontperson to have crossed the Atlantic for some time."

★ Live Review | Metal Hammer U.K. 1996
---------------------------------------
"Manhole strip paint from the walls and make your skin prickle."

4/5 ★ Jason Arnopp | Kerrang! 1996
---------------------------------------
"Welcome to the furious world of Manhole. Disgust, loathing and retribution drips from each suppurating pore of these songs. Deliver it in a a barbed wire bundle of tortured thrash and mean streets rap and you have one of the most powerful albums of empowerment which will be released this year. Scary stuff."

★ The List U.K. 1996
---------------------------------------
"The ironic effect of 'All Is Not Well', an instant classic stuffed to puking anger and frustration, is that it briefly lifts you up to a higher place. An album of high points that sounds totally spontaneous, the sort of record that defines a particular time. This is metallic punnk that swings - the moshpit masses await."

★ Volume | Metallurgy 1996
---------------------------------------
"Manhole singer Tairrie B is the most fascinatingly savage character to emerge in some time, and is destined to spend most of this year royally pissing people off. The intensity level tonight confirms that they are set to be one of this year's breakthrough bands."

★ Live Review | Kerrang! 1996
---------------------------------------
"Manhole is an extremely angry and confrontational CD. Hard-hitting rock with a livid funky twist. Fronted by Tairrie B, who threatens the listener with a barrage of accusing hip hop style lyrics. Produced by Ross Robinson (Korn, Sepultura & Deftones), Manhole is a band made for aggressive radio. Supporting Tairrie B's intense verbal tirades is Manhole's savage guitar grinder Scott Ueda and the intricate rhythm section of bassist Rico Villasenor and drummer Marcelo Palomino. From the thick bass lines of 'Kiss or Kill' to the outright, rage-infested screams of 'Empty' to the metallic guitars and message of 'Down'- Manhole puts the 'gr' in aggro. Not only does 'Down' rock hard but it features the festering vocals of Snot's Lynn Strait. If Rage Against the Machine and Korn were to mate, Manhole would be the love child."

★ Gavin Report 1996
---------------------------------------
Manhole, featuring vocalist Tairrie B. challenges traditional barriers in the heavy metal genre. Despite the continual movement toward gender equality in the United States, heavy metal has remained virtually impervious to the influence of women. But with the Los Angeles-based metal/rap band Manhole, a new era will begin in extreme music.Throughout the history of heavy metal, women have been denied meaningful representation. During the 1980s, women were found almost exclusively as music video decorations. More recently, the situation has not been much better, as women have been essentially nonexistent. Now things are changing in a big way. Emphatically tearing through metal’s gender barrier, Manhole released its debut album "All Is Not Well" earlier this week. With frontwoman Tairrie B. at the helm, Manhole tackles issues facing women, such as sexism, rape, and domestic abuse."In society in general, a woman’s place is behind a man," Tairrie says. "It’s time that men support their women. And that women support themselves. We should have equal pay and we should have equal rights. That’s the way it should be. And that’s not the way it is," she continues. "I’m not the woman who’s going to change everything, but I’m the woman who’s going to say what I feel about it." One of the songs which has attracted a great deal of attention is "Victim," an angry indictment of rapists and the society which condones crimes against women. In the song, Tairrie presents disturbing statistics about rape and refutes several commonly held rape-justifying beliefs.Other songs are no less emotionally-charged. "Cycle of Violence" decries the prevalence of domestic abuse, while "Put Your Head Out" emphatically supports women’s right to choose.
